Powder Hound Bursts Into Flames

Well over 1,000 people were on hand to officially welcome the pending winter season by praying for snow and sacrificing a 20 foot powder hound at the Big Sky Brewing Company in Missoula, MT on Friday, October 16th.

Many thanks to Todd, Trinda and the dozens of volunteers that organized and rallied to make the Burning Dog Festival a fantastic event and raise money for avalanche education and forecasting in West Central Montana. By the way, what was that crazy table game and which team won?

Powder dog ignites and then glows to the delight of the large crowd.

Silver Mountain Resort was proud to be an event sponsor and is looking forward to the pending snow that will surely come as a result of this annual ritual. I can see the clouds starting to form already!

Silver Mountain Summer Wrap Up

Okay, I know I have been bad about blogging this summer. With all the fun I've been having (playing tennis, golfing, water skiing, Village concerts, surfing, hiking, mountain biking, fly fishing, working, Brewsfest, moving, fairs, rodeos, boating, flying, etc.), I did not carve out any time to write about it.

I will try to pick up the pace now that the summer season is over and most of the summer gear is put away. Thankfully, the summer fun never ends at Silver Rapids and we invite you to take advantage of our "back to school" offer to come splash, surf and stay.

Last weekend we celebrated Oktoberfest with a great party in the Village and the SilverRoxx downhill mountain bike races up top. One word to sum it up: epic! Many thanks to all of you who came out despite the crazy weather (it snowed on Saturday morning and was quite breezy on Sunday.)
We really appreciate the fantastic turn out and congratulate everyone who participated.

Starting next weekend and through 10/31, there will be a "haunted mine shaft" set up in the Village. There, of course, will be trick or treating around the Village and nearby neighborhood, pumpkin races in the lazy river and a whole lot more fun planned for Halloween. Noah's will feature an adult costume party and a special presentation of "Shredder" (filmed right here in the Silver Valley) so get your costumes ready!

Oh, did I mention we have a really great season pass sale in progress for the upcoming winter season. Two words: get one! Hope to see you real soon.

Silver Heats Up With Summer Fun!

While Silver Mountain Resort is best known for the abundance of snow that transforms the mountain into a winter playground for skiers, snowboarders and snow tubers, the North Idaho summer offers a wide assortment of activities and adventures for our day and overnight guests.

In addition to the indoor waterpark and limitless outdoor adventures enjoyed by resort guests, Silver Mountain offers a variety of games, activities and events in and around the resort village. Two of the most popular are Ride and Dine and Movies Under the Stars.

Every Friday starting at 2:00pm guests take a ride on North America's longest gondola and enjoy a delicious BBQ at the mountain top. Each week the number of Ride and Dine customers continue to grow and guests rave about the quality of the food and service.

Later that evening when the sun dips behind the mountain, 40-60 people gather round the village fire pit and settle in to view a free outdoor movie and roast s'mores. This year's features have included: Surf's Up (my personal favorite), Cars, High School Musical, A Bug's Life, and Kung Fu Panda.

Surf Idaho Pro-Am Results

The WaveLoch Flow Tour event #5 was held at Silver Rapids on Saturday, June 13.

Idaho is not the first state that comes to mind when you mention a professional surfing competition but the FlowRider® makes this possible and transforms Silver Rapids Indoor Waterpark into a topical-like environment with the feeling of catching a wave on the Florida coast – including the 84-degree water.

45 contestants from across the US were on hand and battled for top honors and a share of the $2,500 cash purse. Local riders held their own against some of the sport’s top talent as Jake Sieler won the junior Bodyboard division and local Mason Adsit took second. Men’s Bodyboard was won by Kyler Bill of Utah. The Masters Bodyboard final results had Aaron Furman of Virginia on top with a close second from Texas rider Cathy Seabert. Female Bodyboard was another awesome final with Morgan Seabert of Texas getting the Victory with Cathy in 2nd, Amanda Furman 3rd and youngest competitor the event and tour Maya Johnson in 4th.

Expert Flowboard was simply a phenomenal display of the highest level of riding you will find anywhere in the Nation all traveling competitors with their sites on the valuable points and cash to be awarded. Sean Silveira was again in classic form with high flying Ollie, kick flips, 360’s and variations that earned him the top spot on the podium. Curtis Lam claims 2nd for his third division of the competition. First year stand up rider Nick Nguyen was 3rd and served notice that he intends to be a future stand up force.

Snow Riding on Memorial Weekend

The 08/09 snow riding season is officially closed after a fantastic weekend of "summer" skiing! Many thanks to all of our guests and the Silver team who made it great.

No need to wait until the snow starts to fly again, Silver is serving up a wide assortment of Outdoor Adventures this summer.

Mountain Biking Update

5/24 UPDATE: The snow is melting fast after the warm weekend. We anticipate that we will have at least one (1) gondola served downhill trail open by Saturday, 5/30.

Dave, PK and team have been hard at work on the lower portions of the trails and will move up the mountain as snow melt allows.
Trails are ready to go from five corners and below and next week we hope to tackle picnic rock down to five corners. Get ready, you'll be riding at Silver very soon!

The Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes is open and the Route of the Hiawatha mountain bike trail is expected to open on May 30th.

There is certainly something special about spring skiing and today was proof. The snow was soft, the sun was warm and the crowd was fantastic!

Don't put away the snow gear just yet as the abundance of snow and the large number of passionate snow riders have inspired us to keep the chair lifts turning on Memorial Day Weekend. Check out our special stay and play packages and the snow report.

Barbieri is LEADMAN Champ Again!

The LEADMAN '09 results are final. Stephen Barbieri retains the title for the fourth year in a row. Casey Perry finished second and David Barbieri came in third. Casey and Stephen were neck and neck coming into the bike to run transition and Stephen poured it on during the run into Gondola Village.

In the women's solo category, Bridget Schwenne took home the title with a time of 1:00:35 just ahead of Tina Sanger who finished in 1:01:35. Victorious Secret was crowned women's team champ with a time of 1:04:55. Defending champ Kristen Armstrong was slowed down by a flat tire and finished 7th overall.

In the men's team bracket, the Lead Pencils won again for the third straight year by posting the event's fastest time of 44:51. The Lead Pencils edged out the Bears Beer Battlestar by a scant 46 seconds.

Many thanks to Karey Scholey for, once again, organizing a fantastic event and to all of the sponsors who, without them, this event would not be possible.

Trail crews have been hard at work this week creating a portion of new trail for the bike leg. The snow to bike transition will be the same as last year (middle of chair 4) and there is a new bike to run transition point.

What a day! Plenty of sun, fun and a really good après ski party at the Mountain Haus. Great to see so many of you out to enjoy it.

We will go at it again this Saturday, April 25th from 8:00am - 3:00pm. Village party and LEADMAN award ceremony in the Village with live music by bluefire down.

Tale of Two Champions

It may be Spring in the valleys, but mountains are still covered with snow, and competitors are gearing up for The 5th Annual Nasco LEADMAN ’09 at Silver Mountain Resort on April 25th. LEADMAN is a unique event where individuals and teams race from the top of Silver Mountain to the valley floor in Kellogg, ID using skis or snowboards, bikes and their feet.

Spokane’s Kristen Armstrong is two-time women’s solo champion and is hopeful for a three-peat next week. “The LEADMAN opens up the season for me and combines three sports I love – skiing, mountain biking and running,” Armstrong said. “The part I look forward to most is the end of race celebration where we share stories and compare the amount of mud we collected during the race,” she continued. Kristen’s advice, “plan what you wear and think through the transitions to minimize the time loss.” Kristen also prepares by sharing strategies with husband Joel who performs the downhill mountain biking duties for the two-time LEADMAN team champions, the Lead Pencils.

Competing again this year for the fourth time is Stephen Barbieri, also from Spokane. Stephen holds the course record and has been crowned men’s solo champion three times. Hoping to end his reign is Stephen’s brother, David, who has been closing the gap in the past two years and, according to Stephen, is taking his training more seriously this year. “I am both impressed and surprised with the LEADMAN each year. Impressed by the terrific volunteers that put on this incredible event and surprised by the always different course, snow, ice, and mud,” said Stephen. “The best part has got to be the beer and burgers afterwards in the village,” he added. His advice: “make sure your equipment is in good shape.”

The event is scheduled for Saturday, April 25th and is hosted by the Kellogg Rotary Club. Contestants and spectators finish the day with live music and barbeque in the Gondola Village Plaza at Silver Mountain Resort. Money raised will benefit the Silver Valley Sparrow Club, a program where kids help other kids with medical needs. Event sponsors and volunteers are needed and invited to participate.
